On Tuesdays 2nd of October the class was split into there groups and told to come up with an idea, the idea had to have narrative but apart from that we could think of anything, our group went to what used to be the LRC to feel like we where in a more relaxed environment to help us come up with an idea. during this process we started by listing some things we did not want to do to get a better idea of what we wanted to do, i wanted to do something arty/creative and from this we decided to ours about two people who are late for college and then race each other, one of them skates while the other free-runs to college and they reach there at the same time and then walk in as normal students. The problem with this is the weather because it would all have to be filmed out side and we don't want to get the equipment wet, also because it's autumn the weathers going to get less sunny and less predictable. this meant that we will have to look at the weather before scheduling a time to film and having a back up plan if it douse rain.
After thinking of all of this we tried to think up a new idea but they all seemed worse and to have the same basic problem, we had to rely on the weather. We then had to present our idea to the rest of the class, to do this our group split off with diffident task, mine was create a power-point, Danny's was to make a synopsis Robin's was to create the storyboard for our idea and Joe's was to think of the sound and what we would be using to record the sound. When it came time to present our idea we decided to let me speak to the class about our idea and tell them how we where going to do it, where as it would of been better for each of us to talk about the part we would contribute the most to, Robin to talk about the cameras and shots we would use. but during this process we where given more ideas for the one minuet film, to use the Cannon 550D instead of the Cannon 60D, we where also asked some valuable questions about our film that we did not such as how long would it take to film and how would we show all of that in just a minuet.
On Thursday the 4th of October we worked on our idea to try and come up with a better ending, also we tried to come up with a new one to see if it would work better, after this we decided to keep with our current idea and to develop the ending to them running/skating into each other to make the end more interesting, we also where looking at the basics of coming up with ideas and a famous man who broke down folk story's and found that they all consisted the same points and from this how films all consist have these points as well, this was to help us understand our ideas and to get us to think more about them and how well they will work.
After this we where given a sheet to fill with the types of sound we would use to get us to think more about the sound of the film and how we would obtain the sound we wanted, such as the atmos sound, we would need the sounds of people cars buses and the general movement of people, and to get this we could just record the sound there without filming, just leaving the microphone on to record the sound that we would normally hear at those places.
On Friday 5th of October we began by looking at what we needed to do to get all the pre-production work complete, some of the tasks where to complete a shooting scheduled to tell people where and when we will be filming and for how long, a script/shooting script to tell us what we are filming and what shots we need, a call sheet so we have everyone's contact information, to go look and take photos of where we would be filming so that we know where we would be going after we finished one scene/shot and the risk assessment telling us what might happen when we are filming.
We where then told that we would be doing some practice shots so that it gives us more of an idea of our roles and responsibility's. We also had to assign a job to our new crew member, luckily are camera operator was sick that day so we temporally gave him the job of being camera operator. While coming up with our practice shots we acted more as a chain of command, by telling the sound and camera operator what to do and also directing the actors, this also gave us the opportunity to feel what its like to be working in the role assigned to us.
On Tuesday 9th of October we started by talking about what we needed to do, after which we split into two different groups, one group consisting of Danielle, Majid and Joe went off to do a location recce with a Cannon 550D and a Zoom microphone to record sounds from the locations, where as me and Robin stayed behind continuing with the pre-production work. When they returned we uploaded the pictures and the sound files to have a look at where we would be filming and to get an idea of the sound levels. This gave us a better idea of the shots we would be using and also at what locations we would need to dub over.
On Thursday the 11th we looked at our pre-production check list and divided up the remaining tasks between us, as we worked we looked towards each other for help if we needed it. This shows that we are working successfully as a team relying on each others strengths when we needed to. By the end of the day we had completed all of the pre-production work apart from the contingency plan which i had forgotten about and am planing to talk to the director about what we can do if its too wet or something which would mean we could not film our one minuet film.
From Friday the 12th to Tuesday the 16th we spent or time working on other parts of the project with other cores work, the main problem during this time is that two of the students where very unreliable.
On Thursday the 18th all our group turned up apart form Majid one of our camera operators. When we booked out our equipment and went to get the 12:05 bus it started to rain which created more of a risk for our actor. When we discussed what to do from their we decided to shot in on Monday the 22nd we then went back to class and thought over our decision and tried to film something around college, we could not get hold of our actor because we had the wrong number for him, something i should of checked beforehand. After this we went back to class before trying again only this time the people we asked to act for us had to go back to class just as we set up our equipment. when we went back to class packed up our equipment and call it a day
On Friday the 19th me and Danielle where the only two who turned up so we talked about what we could do and made a better contingency plan and properly disgust and developed the ideas we came up with so we don't end up lost on the day of filming due to the weather or something happening to create a disruption in our plan, we also developed a script for this idea and a call sheet for Monday. later that day i went and asked our actors teacher if i could use them, without his promotion our actors would not be able to join us on the day of filming.
On Saturday the 20th i text-ed all of the group and gave them the time we would meet up and the time we would be leaving college so they had an idea of how late they could be, this also gave them a chance to discuss anything we would need to work around and also this made sure that they all had my number in case anything happened on the day.
On Monday the 22nd we booked out all our equipment, and organised our group so we all knew what we where doing because our two camera operators did not turn up, also one of our actors said it was to wet for him to do his part in the film, this meant that we where relying on our contingency plan, which me and Danielle developed on Friday. We went with our backup plan and went to our new location, my house to shoot the film, because of the cloudy sky and the lack of light radiating from the energy saver lights some of the shots turned out a little dark. The day went well because we where organised and kept a chain of command so we weren't always changing our ideas and we knew exactly what we where doing and what was expected of us. After we finished filming we packed up and went back to college with the equipment and called it a day.
Evaluation
Pre-Production:
As I was the
first AD I had the most responsibility on the group’s organization, and also I
had to assign different jobs to different members of the group at different
stages of the pre-production, like when it came to doing the location recce I
assigned:
· Danielle (the director) so she can
decide the different locations to film and also look at the different types of
shots she could get.
· Majid (the camera operator) so he
can look at different shots and the locations, so he can also give his opinion
on where we should shoot.
· Joe (the boom operator) so he can
look at the sound levels of the locations we where likely to film and think of
how we could manage to record the dialog and other sounds so that you get the
feel of the location without the loss of dialog.
But during
most of this process I had bad communication with the group as I mainly assign
Danielle and me but forgot to assign Robin, Joe and Majid work to do. It was
due to this that we took longer to complete our pre-production work; this also
meant that when it came time to film on Thursday the 18th we were
not prepared with a proper contingency plan and our shoot fell apart and we
ended the day with nothing.
Production:
During the
production process our two camera operators did not turn up which meant I was
substituted in as the camera operator. It was also wet weather again and one of
our actors (Dexter) could not make it, this meant that we had to go back on our
backup plan. When we arrived at our location we set up the equipment and told
our actor (Sam) what we where doing and how we wanted him to act, during this
we all worked well together as we knew what was going to happen and what we
needed to do and we finished well within the time we allocated ourselves to do
it in that day.
Post-production
When we move
the footage onto the computers we found that some of the shots where missing, I
later found them and move the missing shots to the other group members
computers. This process went well as our entire grope apart from Majid managed
to create an edit that was different, effective and good.
Screening
During the
screening both half’s of the filming group B0473 and the level 3 year one
acting students came and watched the one minute films and to give critical feed
back about them. They said they liked the idea and the way we shot it, that
also said that they liked the beginning where our actor (Sam) was getting
dressed which we speed up but also some people said that they did not like it and
thought that we should of used a jump cut to show what was going on.
My conclusion
All in all I
think it was a success because the audience in general liked it and it made
them laugh and if I was to do anything differently for this it would be to
change the type camera we used, so that I knew what I was doing better when I
was operating it and also I would of made our backup plan the main plan because
of it’s simplicity and its success.
